Back in 1990, the band members of Jane Addition band wanted to conduct a farewell tour for their band. These four band members namely Marc Geiger, Ted Gardner, Don Muller and Perry Farrell took inspiration from Bill Graham concerts. Unlike other music fests of that time, this fest did not stop after one show at one venue. In fact, it starts taking place annually at many locations in the USA and Canada.

Well, the name will sound a bit unusual to many people. The term Lollapalooza was quite popular in 1896. Founder Perry Farrell first come across this word while watching a short film Three Stooges. He found its meaning unique and close to the idea of the fest. The word has two meaning where first meaning says an extraordinary thing which is unusual. The second meaning of this word is a large lollipop.

The festival reborn in 2003 after a long gap of 6 years. It saw success as well as decline which many time blamed to high ticket prices of this fest. In 2010. It crosses the USA borders and reaches to Chile. Subsequently, in 2012 it goes to Brazil and in 2013 Argentina. Similarly, it debuted in Germany and Paris in 2014 and 2016.

The earliest show took place in only one stage which later become two in 1996. Now there are eight stages for live acts.
