It was the time in 1993 when Pearl jam band stopped performing at a venue in Los Angeles. Besides performing at this venue, they gave their performance at the Empire Polo Club in California. The main reason comes out was the rift with the ticket master over the service charge on the tickets.

After this in 1998, Paul Tollett and Rick van Santen decides to organize an annual fest at Empire Polo Club.The surrounding of this venue created a nice impression.Hence, they find it suitable for a large-scale fest. The opening fest took place on 9 and 10 October in 1999 just three months after the Woodstock festival. The first fest was quite a hit with nearly 40,000 people attending this fest.
